چکیده

F ollowing studies reported by Moyers,‘,2 electromyographic (EMG) coordination patterns among the synergists during natural chewing have become of major interest in evaluating jaw functions.3,4 It may be fairly asserted that the posterior fibers of the temporal muscles act as principal stabilizers of the mandible and the masseter muscles serve as workers during natural chewing.s--. Recently, it has been suggested that EMG feedback technique may be useful in the conscious control of skeletal muscles and in treating bruxism and myofacial pain dysfunction (MPD) syndrome.*-” Despite analysis with statistically quantitative methods of evaluating the EMG activities of skeletal musc1es,12-14 the typical coordination pattern of the jaw muscles during natural chewing in normal subjects has not been well standardized. The purpose of this study was to standardize and classify the power coordination pattern among the left and right masseter and posterior temporal muscles, in terms of integrated EMG potentials per stroke during gum chewing in normal subjects.

Evaluation of jaw and neck muscle activities while chewing using EMG-EMG transfer function and EMG-EMG coherence function analyses in healthy subjects

This study aims to quantitatively clarify the physiological features in rhythmically coordinated jaw and neck muscle EMG activities while chewing gum using EMG-EMG transfer function and EMG-EMG coherence function analyses in 20 healthy subjects. The chewing side masseter muscle EMG signal was used as the reference signal, while the other jaw (non-chewing side masseter muscle, bilateral anterior...

[Control ability to coordination pattern of masticatory muscle activities during maximal clenching in centric occlusal position].

The control ability which changes the coordination pattern of masticatory muscles in the Maximal voluntary clenching was investigated in the correlativity, using the electromyogram and the Dental-Prescale system on ten normal subjects. Even the insignificant correlative Activity index to the balancing point of occlusal force was shown, though the anteroposterior control index (CA/P) marked slig...

Characteristics of masticatory muscles in children with unilateral posterior crossbite.

The aim of this study was to detect possible differences in the EMG (electromyography) activity, chewing rate (CR), cycle duration (CD) and preferred chewing side (PCS) between children with and without unilateral posterior crossbite. Thirty-seven children aged from 7 to 10 years were selected from the clinic of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Piracicaba Dental School, Brazil, and divide...

The effects of pain from the mandibular joint and muscles on masticatory motor behaviour in man.

Habitual chewing of a coherent bolus was studied in 12 dentate subjects with painful mandibular-joint disorders and 12 healthy, dentate controls. Bilateral electromyograms of jaw elevators, and jaw movement, were recorded for three complete masticatory sequences. Computer analysis was used to classify chewing movements as continuous or discontinuous. Root-mean-square (r.m.s.), myoelectric signa...

Improved Prefrontal Activity and Chewing Performance as Function of Wearing Denture in Partially Edentulous Elderly Individuals: Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of wearing a denture on prefrontal activity during chewing performance. We specifically examined that activity in 12 elderly edentulous subjects [63.1±6.1 years old (mean ± SD)] and 12 young healthy controls (22.1±2.3 years old) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in order to evaluate the quality of prefrontal functionality ...
